Wood Wool Slab: Is it lurking in your roof?

Wood wool slab is a material that never crosses the mind of many commercial property owners. But for those who do consider it, it is often a concern and something that they are keen our surveyors report on when carrying out commercial building surveys.

When the material forms part of a roof structure, it can pose a structural threat owing to its tendency to allowing moisture ingress, which in turn corrodes steel and can lead to failure and collapse.

This month, our Commercial Partner, Matthew Baker MRICS MCABE C.Build E, has collaborated with CABE’s Building Engineer Journal, building on our own guide to wood wool slab. Matthew’s article explains what wood wool slab is and where it is commonly found. It highlights the situations where wood wool slab can be cause for concern, and circumstances where it can be safely left in situ, providing the building managers commit to regular inspection and maintenance.
